Rolling hills, fairy tale-like tropical rainforests, scenic lakes and breathtaking encounters with our ancestors – this is the Land of the Thousand Hills: Rwanda! Tall old mahoganies, ebonies and giant tree ferns tower above you. Brightly colored birds twitter in the trees. Butterflies flit around you. Then you find them: the cheeky chimps. They move swiftly through the forest or swing high in the canopies of the trees. The highlight though will be your first encounter with an endangered silverback! Nothing prepares you for this moment… You hold your breath. You gaze at this intelligent looking animal. It looks at you thoughtfully, mindful of you being another human being. You forget all the exhaustion of your trekking. You can’t believe that an hour passed by in an instant. You will remember this hour in Rwanda a lifetime.

Itinerary Summary

KIGALI – 1 NIGHT
If you have ever watched the movie ‘Hotel Rwanda’, we can recommend a guided city tour and a visit of the Kigali Genocide Memorial and Nyamata Church. It will be very moving and we can’t explain in words the emotion that comes from visiting this memorial and hearing the real life stories from survivors. Rwanda has a pained past, but a hopeful future and it is great to see the spirit of Rwandese to forgive, but not to forget.

NYUNGWE FOREST – 2 NIGHTS
Nyungwe Forest Lodge is located in the heart of Africa’s largest mountain rainforest that is home to 13 different species of primates – representing 20% of all apes in Africa! No better location than Nyungwe in Rwanda to trek those chimps, black and white colobus monkeys or the rare chattering golden monkeys. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the African jungle in this 5-star luxury haven. On your way you will also visit the Nyanza Palace in Butare to complete your picture of Rwanda’s history.

LAKE KIVU – 1 NIGHT
The scenic road to Lake Kivu gently curves through the hills and mountains of Rwanda. Every corner you turn will leave you breathless. Sit back and enjoy the journey, eucalyptus-lined roads, steep terraced hills covered with banana trees and smiling villagers and waving children. Lake Kivu Serena is surrounded by tropical gardens and has access to its own private beach – the ideal spot for a one-night stop over to recharge your batteries.

VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK – 3 NIGHTS
The Volcanoes National Park is part of the Virunga Mountains extending across Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Virungas are home to around 480 mountain gorillas, more than half of the world’s entire population (the rest live in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda). On the day of your trekking you will be allocated one of ten gorilla families that are habituated for human interaction. Follow your guide on a magical trek through dense rainforest; although the trekking can be quite long, believe us when we say it is worth the effort.
